Abstract

Local drug delivery systems for cancer therapy not only can decrease the toxicity of systemic approaches but also can provide a sustained release of the anticancer agents at the tumor vicinity and therefore enhance the therapeutic efficacy. Electrospun-based systems show some appealing features such as high loading capacity of the anticancer agents, which make them suitable for local drug delivery. In this chapter, applications of electrospun-based systems for local chemotherapy, hyperthermia therapy, photothermal-chemotherapy, gene therapy, and circulating tumor cell capturing are discussed. Generally, electrospun-based systems have been found to be more efficacious than the conventional systemic treatments in terms of tumor growth inhibition and cancer therapy. © 2017 Elsevier Ltd.
