Evaluation of Serum Transferrin Receptors in Children With Iron Deficiency Anemia

Abstract

Objective: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) may account for approximately half of the burden of childhood anemia worldwide. This study was conducted to assess serum level of soluble Transferin Receptor (sTfR) in children with IDA and healthy subjects recruited to Children's Medical Center. Methods: In a cross-sectional study, 26 children with IDA and 27 apparently healthy were recruited from Children's Medical Center, Tehran, Iran, from 2008 to 2009. Hb, MCV were measured using a SYSMEX K21 cell counter. The serum ferritin(SF) was measured using electrochemiluminescence immunoassay on an automated Elecsys2010 (Roche Diagnostics) and serum sTfR levels were measured by ELISA method. Results: In Children with IDA had higher level of sTfR, compared with control group. We found a significant negative correlation of sTfR with Hb, MCV and ferritin although it was not significant for SF. STfR found to be unrelated to age and gender in both groups. Conclusion: When a ferritin level is not reliable in circumstances such as infection and inflammation, sTfR can be considered as a useful test for evaluating iron deficiency.
