Abstract

Carotenoid astaxanthin (AST) has been reported to have anti-inflammatory and metabolic regulatory effects. On the other hand, nuclear receptor PPAR-γ and its related miR-27a are involved in metabolic regulation and related inflammatory processes. This study was conducted with the aim of investigating the effect of AST on blood metabolic profile and on PPAR-γ/miR-27a axis. In this study, 50 patients with type 2 diabetes were randomly divided into two groups, one group with oral AST and the other group with placebo 10 mg per day. After 12 weeks, blood metabolic profile and nuclear receptor PPARγ/miR-27a expression were evaluated. After 12 weeks consumption, AST could improve serum metabolic profile (FBS, TG, and TC levels). As well as, AST could affect the expression of PPAR-γ/miR-27a axis (p-value ≤ 0.01). As a natural compound that improves metabolic and inflammatory processes, AST can be supplemented in patients with metabolic disorders. One of the mechanisms of its effect can be through PPAR-γ/miR-27a axis. © 2023
