Abstract

The advent of nanotechnology has ushered in a new era in dental implantology, offering transformative advances in the design, functionality, and clinical success of dental implants. This review synthesizes recent progress in nanoscale surface modifications, nanocoatings, and the integration of nanomaterials into implant systems. Nanostructured surfaces, engineered to mimic the extracellular matrix, have been shown to substantially improve osseointegration by enhancing osteoblast adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation. The incorporation of antimicrobial nanomaterials, such as silver, copper, and zinc oxide nanoparticles, endows implants with potent antibacterial properties, effectively reducing biofilm formation and the incidence of peri-implant infections. Nanocoatings and functionalized surfaces provide not only enhanced bioactivity and corrosion resistance but also serve as reservoirs for the localized delivery of therapeutic agents, targeting inflammation and promoting tissue healing. Furthermore, advancements in the mechanical design of nanotechnology-modified implants, including nanocomposites, address longstanding challenges of mechanical mismatch with bone and improve long-term durability. Nevertheless, issues related to cytotoxicity, regulatory approval, and translation from laboratory research to clinical practice require continued investigation. Overall, the integration of nanotechnology into dental implants holds significant promise for improving patient outcomes through superior osseointegration, infection control, mechanical performance, and the prospect of personalized implant solutions. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
