Abstract

Liposomes have been well known nanoscale delivery systems in fields of pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and food industries. The scale up challenges for providing product uniformity and stability requires cost benefit, consistent and scalable technologies. The most recent improvements and technologies of liposomes industrial scale production reviews comprehensively in this chapter. The novel scalable methodologies include microfluidic systems, supercritical fluid assisted techniques, and automated liposome fabrication equipment are well discussed. The precise manipulation on liposome size, lamellarity and entrapment efficiency could be achieved by microfluidic systems. The solvent free, eco friendly and enhanced reproducible production in large scale is available by supercritical fluid technologies. The liposome manufacturing, quality controls and regulatory compliance are transforming by developing automation, robotics, artificial intelligence, and various optimization methods. The novel innovations like vortex fluidic devices, 3D-printed microfluidic systems, and self-assembling liposome platforms are going to improve the sustainable and green based approaches. Considering the regulatory and economic aspects, the involved factors in liposome quality like the lipid ingredients, temperature, pH, and procedure factors are also discussed in this chapter. Ultimately, the significant challenges in scale up process and future anticipations for reaching a robust, standard, economic, automated, and environment friendly production of liposomes are determined. © 2026 Elsevier Ltd.
