Abstract

The Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) and the Joint FAO/WHO Meeting on Pesticide Residues (JMPR) serve as international scientific advisory bodies that perform toxicological evaluation and risk assessments on chemicals and provide advice to the Food and Agriculture Organization, the World Health Organization, and the member countries. JECFA has evaluated more than 2600 food additives, approximately 50 contaminants and naturally occurring toxicants (World Health Organization, 2022) and residues of approximately 90 veterinary drugs (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), 2022a). For food additives, JECFA establishes acceptable daily intake (ADI) values on the basis of available toxicological and relevant information. For contaminants and naturally occurring toxicants, levels corresponding to tolerable intakes are established. With veterinary drug residues, corresponding maximum residue limits (MRLs) in animal tissues are recommended. JMPR establishes ADIs and acute reference doses on the basis of the toxicological data and related information. JMPR reviews pesticide use patterns, data on pesticides, and methods of analysis of pesticide residues. It recommends MRLs for pesticides that occur in food commodities. © 2024 Elsevier Inc.
