Abstract

Medication overuse headache (MOH) is a secondary headache disorder in the form of a chronic daily headache resulting from analgesic overuse for the course of 10-15 days per month, depending on the type of analgesic, in a patient with preexisting frequent migraine or, less often, tension-type headache (TTH). It mainly presents as the more frequent occurrence of previous headaches with a tendency to show fewer migraine features due to the effect of the analgesics. Specific demographic features and the presence of comorbidities and lifestyle features and habits are risk factors for development of MOH in an individual with frequent migraine or TTH. A multidisciplinary approach that includes stopping analgesic use, managing lifestyle and habits, and pharmacologic therapy can help the patient to overcome this particularly disabling condition. © 2022 Elsevier Inc.
