Abstract

Nonmelanoma skin cancers including basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are the most prevalent malignancies in humans. The gold standard treatment for these cancers is surgery but there are obvious limitations to this modality such as tumors affecting individuals that are medically inoperable, patients with multiple malignancies due to genetic susceptibility or arsenic poisoning, and tumors affecting cosmetically sensitive sites. Therefore, newer strategies have been in demand. Immunotherapy is one of these emerging strategies that has been miraculous in the treatment of melanoma. It works by boosting the host's immune system against tumoral cells and has the advantage of being noninvasive and having the potential to prevent future malignancies. Herein the several types of immunotherapy have been explored including intralesional interferons and interleukins, cancer vaccines, check pint inhibitor antibodies, and virotherapy. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.
