Abstract

Considering individual variability in tumors’ biologic reactions to different treatment methods, the precision medicine approach in cancer treatment opens up a new horizon in the management of cancers. The precision medicine aims to eschew applying the one treatment for all patients’ model, which focuses on providing an average response to care and attempts to narrow down the treatment procedures to individual patients by tailoring treatment in line with the biological properties of the disease and its response to treatment. Liquid biopsy is one type of precision medicine that is a noninvasive procedure that is gaining significant popularity among cancer treatment boards. Liquid biopsy isolates several molecules that can be used for tests, and this chapter meticulously discusses their potential clinical application. Some of these include circulating tumor cells (CTCs), circulating tumor DNAs (ctDNA), RNAs (miRNAs, lncRNAs, and mRNAs), cell-free proteins, peptides, and exosomes as cancer biomarkers. The precision medicine is finding more extensive application and treatment procedures are moving toward focusing on the behaviors of the tumors, rather a generic response to the disease. Considering all the research into the field of liquid biopsy, it is found to be most applicable in the early diagnosis of the disease or estimating the probable failure of treatment in an early stage. © 2022 Elsevier Inc.
