Abstract

Commonly known as chebulic myrobalan, Terminalia chebula Retz. contains tannins, flavonoids, fruit acids, monosaccharides/oligosaccharides, and simple phenolic acid derivatives. TPM references recommend this fruit for various conditions including neurological and gastrointestinal disorders. Moreover, topical use is mentioned for oral hygiene and bleeding gums. A number of RCTs have investigated effects of this fruit, demonstrating it to have beneficial effects in diabetes and hyperuricemia. In studies on healthy subjects, it has been shown to improve joint function and skin condition. Moreover, preclinical studies indicate beneficial effects on metabolic, gastrointestinal, and neurological disorders. There is also primary evidence for antiparasitic activity of chebulic myrobalan. T. chebula can cause constipation due to high tannin content. Caution should be taken when administering to diabetic patients and also in concomitant use of drugs metabolized by CYP2E1 and CYP2C19. © 2024 Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.
