Abstract

Minor alterations of immune, neuroendocrine, and autonomic function may be associated with the chronic fatigue syndrome. ω-3 fatty acids decrease the production of putative mediators of inflammation, including interleukin-1, and tumor necrosis factor. Since interleukin-1 and tumor necrosis factor are the principal polypeptide mediators of immunoregulation, reduced production of these cytokines by dietary supplementation with ω-3, may be a possible mechanism for the treatment of chronic fatigue syndrome. © 2002, Elsevier Science Ltd.
