Abstract

Multiple studies reported that systemic levels of antioxidants and cancer are inversely correlated, thereby; antioxidants might have both the preventive and therapeutic effects for cancer management through their interactions with multiple cancer-related pathways. Although there are some inconsistencies in the reports relating to the intake of antioxidants to cancer incidence/initiation/progression, a variety of in vitro and in vivo data indicated that high systemic levels of antioxidants can inhibit cancer. Although supplementation with antioxidants at low doses has been suggested to be chemopreventive and leads to increased expression of genes encoding cytoprotective proteins, but at high doses, antioxidants can act as pro-oxidants and induce tumorigenesis. Yet, deteriorate/beneficial effect of antioxidant supplementation remains questionable for patients during cancer therapy. © 2022 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
