Abstract

Lamium album belongs to a flowering family of plants known as Lamiaceae, which inhabits Europe and Asia. L. album also known as white dead-nettle expresses a wide range of therapeutic interventions, which are assigned to various biologically active substances, such as iridoids, phenolic acids, flavonoids, isoscutellarein derivatives, terpene, and essential oil phytoecdysteroids. Iridoids as a major constituent and as glycosides exhibit biological activity such as antiarthritic, antiinflammatory, antibacterial, anticancer, antioxidant, antiviral, immunomodulatory, wound healing, and neuroprotective activities. Aerial parts of white dead-nettle have flavonoids which protect normal human skin fibroblasts against oxidative stress-induced cell injury. Ecdysteroids from the aerial part of L. album stimulate protein synthesis and immune response, lower blood cholesterol and glucose concentrations, and have antimutagenic, antioxidant, and wound healing properties. In this chapter, we highlight the sources and bioavailability, health effects, and possible interaction of L. album with drugs, foods, and other supplements. © 2019 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
