Abstract

Among different techniques to produce scaffolds, three-dimensional (3D) printing has attracted a great deal of attention because of a desirable control to generate customized and patient-specific constructs, which are able to optimize cellular adhesion, proliferation, and migration for accelerating regeneration processes. Hence, engineered structures with interconnected pores, different kinds of materials, and complicated shapes can be produced by this new technology. Finding a proper material is assumed as one of major challenges for creating an ideal scaffold. Chitosan is one of the best materials for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine due to its favorable properties such as hydrophilicity, biocompatibility, biodegradability, and antimicrobial activities. In this review, 3D printing methods of chitosan and its biomedical applications were overviewed briefly. A summary of novel recent studies on 3D printed-chitosan matrixes, obtained results, limitations, and future trends were also presented. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.
