Abstract

Cellular immune responses, mediated by CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, play a major role in defense against intracellular and extracellular bacteria as well as immunity against tumors. Different subsets of effector CD4+ T lymphocytes (e.g., Th1, Th2, and Th17) provide help to other leukocytes to efficiently eradicate extracellular bacteria while effector CD8+ T lymphocytes (e.g., CTLs) directly kill the cells infected with viruses or intracellular bacteria. In this chapter, the stages of T cell activation, and also the effector T cell responses to diverse pathogens will be discussed. © 2022 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
