Abstract

As the first synthesized nitrofuran, nitrofuran carboxaldehyde (NFC) is classified as a flammable solid. It has pictograms of “flammable” and “health hazard.” NFC and its derivative have been used for developing a variety of compounds with broad-spectrum antibacterial activity and inhibiting some kinds of protozoan and fungal infections. Although the 5-nitro group responsible for NFC antimicrobial activity plays a significant role in its genotoxicity, it is almost implausible to draw a conclusion regarding immunotoxicity, reproductive and developmental toxicity, chronic toxicity, carcinogenicity, and specific organ toxicity of this agent. More studies are needed to investigate NFC's toxicokinetic and toxicogenomic. © 2024 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
