Abstract

Chitosan is a nontoxic natural material at a reasonable price. These two essential properties of chitosan make it attractive in research and industries related to tissue engineering and 3D bioprinting. Chitosan, as a formable hydrogel, has various crosslinkers affect the toxicity and printability of the chitosan-based hydrogels. Crosslinkers of biomaterials play a significant role in their applications in tissue engineering. Crosslinkers can determine the final cytotoxicity of hydrogel-based scaffolds. This review investigates significant chitosan crosslinkers, including β-glycerophosphate, tripolyphosphate, aldehydes, genipin, and the effects of different pH. This study concentrates on chitosan as a favorite biomaterial and surveys its major crosslinkers for suitability in bioinks. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.
