Abstract

Ferroptosis is a newly identified form of programmed cell death marked by lipid peroxidation, accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and iron-dependent oxidative damage. Studies have shown that ferroptosis plays a significant role in tumor biology, with ferroptosis-susceptible cells capable of inhibiting the growth of malignant tumors. Recent discoveries have highlighted the crucial role of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), including microRNAs (miRNAs), circular RNAs (circRNAs), and long ncRNAs, in the molecular mechanisms governing ferroptosis, thereby influencing cancer progression. However, the precise mechanisms by which ncRNAs regulate ferroptosis are still not fully understood. Research is increasingly demonstrating that ncRNAs are involved in regulating the initiation and progression of ferroptosis, as well as in the development of various cancers, such as those affecting the liver, breast, and lung. This review comprehensively explores the relationship between ncRNAs involved in ferroptosis and cancer development. The specific roles of ncRNAs in ferroptosis within the context of cancer remain an area ripe for further exploration. Through this review, our understanding of the role of ncRNAs in both ferroptosis and cancer progression is expected to deepen, opening up exciting avenues for future research into novel cancer biomarkers for diagnosis and therapeutic interventions. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
