Abstract

There are thousands of surgical procedures for the replacement or repair of bone tissues that has been damaged through disease or trauma. In recent years, considerable interest was toward biologically active scaffolds based on similar characteristics to that of tissue/organ. The present review aims to explain the potential of bioactive glass (BG)/polymer composite scaffolds to accelerate bone healing process. BGs have been recently achieved much attention in bone tissue engineering due to their superior features such as osteoconductivity, osteoinductivity, and ability to improve angiogenesis activity deep into the damages tissues. The combination of micro- or nano-sized BG inclusions with different synthetic and natural polymers is proposed as an effective approach to produce composite scaffolds which can be used in a variety of dental and orthopaedic applications. © 2018 Elsevier Ltd.
