Abstract

Migraine headaches are disabling conditions, especially in young adults. Correct diagnosis, the choice of medication to control headache attacks, and appropriate prophylactic treatment when implicated can help to decrease the burden of the disease. Differences in migraine characteristics in children and migraine attacks accompanied by autonomic symptoms can be misdiagnosed and require attention. In order to select the best abortive medication, the duration of the attack, onset-to-peak migraine time, and its severity should be considered. Migraine prophylactic medications are of different types and should be precisely selected according to the migraineur's age, body mass index, comorbid diseases, and gender. New classes of abortive medication (ditans and gepants) and recently approved calcitonin gene-related peptide antagonists for migraine prophylaxis are promising. Botulinum toxin injection, nerve block, and nerve stimulators are sometimes required for chronic migraines. © 2022 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
