Abstract

The development of transition metal-free 2-isocyanobiaryl-based reactions has received much attention due to the widespread presence of phenanthidine frameworks as products in pharmacological chemistry and materials science. This review article focuses on the achievements from 2013 until now in various metal-free catalyzed reactions and discusses challenging mechanisms and features of the transformations. Graphical abstract: Isocyanides, in particular, 2-isocyanobiaryls have attracted extensive attention, due to their distinctive properties in the field of synthetic chemistry. The preparation of various phenanthridine-containing compounds from these scaffolds has been investigated in the two last decades. Hence, the synthesis of valuable bioactive phenanthridines via coupling reaction/cyclization of 2-isocyanobiaryls with many kinds of organic compounds is highlighted in this review.
